Classic Blackjack

Classic Blackjack

This is the oldest form of blackjack and is often referred to as traditional blackjack. The major difference between classic blackjack and other variants is the type of house edge it offers and the fact that you only play with a single deck with the exceptions of a few casinos that offer more options.

A player makes his bet before the game begins. Each player is dealt with two cards face up. The dealer’s one card faces down. The player makes his decision whether to hit, stand or double depending on the odds that are favorable. The payout is 3:2. The player can hit as many times as possible as long as he does not exceed 21 in which case he busts.

In this game, the dealer always stands on 17. Getting a 21 in this game, however, does not mean that the player has Blackjack; it only gives him a sum of 21.A player can split cards only of the same value but he gets only one winning hand. He doubles only cards valued 9-11 that do not have an Ace and only draw one card. A player can get insurance only if the dealer has an Ace that is face up which could pay up to 2:1. However if the dealer wins the bet, the player automatically loses. A player can double after a split but can never surrender. Hard totals which are 5-17 have only the hit, stand, double and surrender options. A player can hit, stand and double on soft totals Ace, 5, 9.

The cards in Blackjack are worth their face value except jack, queens, and kings which are valued at 10 while the Ace at 11 or 1. When a player gets a 21, he has to stand and if a dealer gets a Blackjack then the rest of the players lose if they do not have a Blackjack. If a player and a dealer tie, then the player is given back his original bet.Card counting is important for every player so as to taken down the house edge and get closer to 21 or get 21 before the dealer does.

One of the reasons classic Blackjack favors a player is because the dealer always has to hit if he has 16 or less and must stand down if he has 17 and higher. The dealer always plays using the basic blackjack strategy thus the player can take the dealer down if he can beat the dealer at his own game. Apart from mimicking the dealer, the player can use other strategies like doubling down after being dealt his first two cards. He can also split the pairs to get two hands. He is also allowed to double after splitting which only gives him four hands. However, a player cannot have a Blackjack after splitting.

Players can give insurance if the he thinks the dealer has a Blackjack. However, this decision could make a player bust as it’s not always that the dealer has a Blackjack.
